Lipman Family Lemur Forest
The Lipman Family Lemur Forest is the largest outdoor habitat for lemurs in the country and features seven different lemur species Visitors can observe the dynamics of so many individuals together as these prosimians from Madagascar climb numerous large, natural trees throughout the exhibit, bask in the sun, or curl up together for an afternoon nap.
This multi-species habitat houses ring-tailed lemurs, blue-eyed black lemurs, black and white ruffed lemurs, crowned lemurs, red bellied lemurs, red fronted lemurs, and red ruffed lemurs. You’ll see these very similar, yet uniquely diverse animals interacting, relaxing and leaping from tree to tree. If you don’t see any at first glance, look carefully high in the trees, much as you would on a trip through the forests of Madagascar. Guests can see the lemurs from several vantage points: from across a surrounding pond, looking eye to eye at lemurs in the trees or gazing down below from an elevated boardwalk.
Endangered in the Wild
You’ll learn about the plight of lemurs in Madagascar, where the numbers in the wild are declining because of ongoing destruction of their native habitat due to deforestation and human development. The Zoo has done important conservation work in Madagascar, bringing global awareness to Madagascar as a biodiversity hot spot.
There is a donation box in the exhibit where you can donate directly to the Madagascar Fauna Group to help save the lemurs.
