Adopt-an-Orangutan
As the largest tree-dwelling animal and the second largest ape species on the planet, the Bornean orangutan can be found in the jungles of the island Borneo. While orangutans could once be found throughout Southeast Asia, they now inhabit only 2 islands: Borneo and Sumatra.
Adopt-an-Animal: Bornean Orangutan
An extremely intelligent species, Bornean orangutans will often use tools to assist them in tasks. Picking bugs out of small spaces with sticks, using leaves as shelter, and opening fruit with rocks are just some of the ways these resourceful primates demonstrate their advanced mental capabilities. They have several adaptations that make them well-suited for an arboreal lifestyle: arms which are typically 30% longer than their legs, dexterous hands and feet to grip branches as they swing throughout the forest canopy, and flexible hips which give their legs increased mobility.
Your Adopt-an-Animal donation will be used to support these clever creatures and further the San Francisco Zoological Society’s mission to connect people to wildlife, inspire caring for nature, and advance conservation action. An adoption of a Bornean orangutan makes a great gift for friends, coworkers, family or for yourself!
