Adopt-an-Animal: Huacaya Alpaca

Did you know that alpacas are not wild animals? The Alpaca is a domesticated breed descended from vicuñas, South American ruminants from the Andes Mountains. As prized pets and cattle around the world, they are raised mainly for their soft wool and its many uses. Alpacas are the smallest members of the camel family. Like other members of the camel family, they will spit when they feel threatened or challenged. While alpacas have been exported to farms all over the world, 99 percent of the population is still located in South America. Like all other ruminants, alpacas have three-chambered stomachs that help them digest their diet of grass and other roughage. Because they don’t have teeth in the upper front of their mouth, alpacas often appear to have an under bite.
