Volunteer at The Insect Zoo!

One of the oldest insectariums in the country, the San Francisco Insect Zoo has been in continuous operation since 1979. The exhibit area contains preserved specimens, a hands-on microscope, an observation beehive, a reading area for young children, a science booth for presentations, and more than thirty displays of live insects, arachnids, and other arthropods.

As an Adult Volunteer, not only will you learn about the animals in our collection, but you will also care for and teach visitors about the SF Zoo’s insects. The tasks of volunteers include preparing diets, assisting with designing habitats, giving public presentations, and helping with the cleaning and maintenance of the Insect Zoo.

Volunteer applicants should expect the following:

  • Must be 18 years of age and over
  • Must participate in an interview
  • Must complete a background check ($50)
  • Must purchase a uniform set ($30)

Commitment:

  • Available Shifts consist of four (4) hours or more between 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Minimum commitment of two (2) days per month for six (6) months

 

Applicants should posses the following skills:

  • Comfortable working with invertebrates
  • A desire to learn about the biology and natural history of animals
  • Good verbal communication skills with co-workers and visitors
  • Capable of working independently and collaboratively
  • Able to stand or remain on duty for prolonged periods of time
  • Adheres to all safety practices and protocols
  • Ability to cope with occasional illness, injury, or loss of animals
  • A desire to fulfill the mission of the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens, which is to connect all people with wildlife, inspire caring for nature, and advance conservation action.

Daily husbandry tasks for volunteers may include:

  • Preparing diets
  • Feeding invertebrates
  • Setting up terraria
  • Interacting with the Public
  • Cleaning exhibit room
  • Holiday Events
  • Special Projects
